Available Government Schemes
Drugs Payment Scheme ( DPS)
You can apply for a Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) card if you or your family pay more than €80 a month for:
- Approved prescribed drugs and medicines.
- Rental costs for a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.
- Rental costs for oxygen.
Family Applications: For the purposes of a DPS card, a family is defined as the below:
- A family is an adult, their partner and any children or dependants.
- If you're applying as a family, you can add anyone age 18 to 23 in full-time education.
- Anyone over the age of 18 not in full-time education must apply for their own card.
- a physical disability
- an intellectual disability
- an illness
Medical Card Scheme
Medical Cards in Ireland allow people to access Family Doctor or GP services, community health services, dental services, hospital care and a range of other benefits free of charge or at a reduced cost.Medical card holders under the age of 70 years, pay a prescription charge of €1.00 for each item. This is up to a maximum of €15 per month, for each person or family.
If you are over 70 years of age, there is a prescription charge of €1.00 for each item. This is up to a maximum of €10 per month, for each person or family.

Long Term Illness Scheme (LTIS)
If you have certain long-term illnesses or disabilities, you may be eligible to apply for the Long-Term Illness Scheme which covers certain drugs, medicines & surgical appliances related to your illness. If you require unapproved medicines or equipment, our pharmacy team can apply for you under the scheme.If you have one of the medical conditions below, you should apply to join the Long Term Illness Scheme to help cover the cost of your medication.
The conditions covered by the scheme are:
- Acute leukaemia
- Cerebral palsy
- Cystic fibrosis
- Diabetes insipidus
- Diabetes mellitus (Gestational diabetes not included)
- Epilepsy
- Haemophilia
- Hydrocephalus
- Intellectual disability (mental handicap)
- Mental health condition - people aged 16 and younger
- Muscular dystrophy
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinsonism
- Phenylketonuria (PKU)
- Spina bifida
- Thalidomide conditions
High Tech Scheme
Some specialised medicines can be provided by pharmacies on receipt of a hospital consultant’s prescription, either under the DPS or GMS scheme.

Our baby weighing service operates on a walk-in basis without the need for an appointment so you can weigh your baby at a time that suits you best. We have a baby weighing scales available in both Wilson's Pharmacy Westbeach and Ticknock Pharmacy, Cobh.How can Wilson’s Pharmacy help?

Blood Pressure Check
How Our Blood Pressure Screening Service Works:
Simply walk into either Westbeach or Ticknock Pharmacy, Cobh & ask a member of our team to help you with our blood pressure monitor.To use ensure accurate readings, please remove any coats, jackets or watches and place your left wrist into the blood pressure cuff. Once your blood pressure has been measured, a ticket will be printed with your results.
For best results, we recommend avoiding caffeine, smoking or exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking the test.
How to Interpret Your Results:
Your results will be presented as a systolic and diastolic figure, for example normal blood pressure may read as 120/80 mm Hg, while high blood pressure may appear as 130/80 mm Hg or higher. Our pharmacists can help you to interpret your results & answer any questions you may have.Why should you regularly monitor your blood pressure?
Untreated high blood pressure may increase your risk of health conditions such as heart disease or a stroke. Regular monitoring can help to detect high blood pressure and help you to take preventative action.Regular monitoring is important if you:
- Have a family history of high blood pressure
- Have conditions such as diabetes or high cholesterol
- Are taking blood pressure medications

Emergency Contraception
What is Emergency Contraception?
Emergency contraception is a pill which can be taken if regular contraception failed, or no contraceptive was used. The morning-after pill is a safe and effective method to prevent unplanned pregnancy. It can work for up to 5 days after unprotected sex, however, for best results, it is important to take emergency contraception as soon as possible.How Does This Service Work?
There is no need for an appointment, prescription or GP visit to avail of the morning-after pill. Simply walk into either of our pharmacies in Westbeach or Ticknock and ask to speak with the pharmacist. The pharmacist will ask a few simple questions to ensure the morning-after pill is suitable for you. If it is confirmed as safe for you to take, the pharmacist will then provide you with the medication. If the medication is unsuitable for you to take, our pharmacists will guide you to other sources of support.Our staff are trained to assist you with discretion & professionalism.
Is There a Fee for this Service?
If you are between the ages of 17 - 35 or hold a valid Medical Card, emergency contraception is available free of charge. For customers who do not meet these criteria, a fee will apply.
Medication Usage Review
How does a medication review work?
During a medication review at Wilson’s Pharmacy, we will list and assess each of the medications you are currently taking to determine any areas for improvement. We will also review your medical history with us and consider your current health conditions. Medication affects everyone differently and it is important to regularly address any medication concerns you have with your pharmacist. This review is conducted free of charge.To book a medication review, simply call your usual pharmacy at either Wilson’s Westbeach or Ticknock Pharmacy, Cobh and request to schedule a review with your pharmacist.

Passport Photos
How do I Upload My Passport Photos for Online Applications?
Once your photo has been taken, we will email you a unique code via IDStation Online. This code can then be entered on the Passport Online website allowing your photos to be automatically uploaded. We will also provide you with a hard copy of your passport photo.Can my Photos be Used for Other Forms of Identification?

Compression Stocking Measurement
What are compression stockings?
Compression stockings are designed to improve blood flow and circulation while helping to manage various health conditions affecting the legs and ankles. Compression stockings are particularly effective in treating swollen legs or ankles, varicose veins & promoting blood circulation during pregnancy.Compression stockings can be prescribed by your GP or recommended by another healthcare professional. They are also available with your Medical Card; however, you must have an appropriate Medical Card Prescription to order the stockings.
Due to the variety in size and strength of compression, it is recommended to have a consultation to determine the best fit for you.
How does the compression stocking fitting service work?
To arrange a stocking measurement, call either Wilsons Pharmacy Westbeach or Ticknock Pharmacy, Cobh. For an accurate measurement, we recommend scheduling your appointment before midday as legs tend to naturally swell throughout the day.Once your measurement is complete, we will order your stockings and will contact you when they have arrived in store.
